In Conversation with Chloe: Why Diversity in Data Is Everyone’s Business

Welcome back to the Arreoblue Data Blog, where we explore the people and ideas shaping the future of data and AI.

This time, we sit down with Chloe, Arreoblue’s Account and Alliance Manager, to talk about the gender imbalance in data, the unseen biases buried in everyday systems, and what it really takes to break into consulting. Chloe joined Arreoblue only a few months ago and has become one of the most passionate voices in our organisation. Consider this your invitation into her world.

The Gender Gap Behind the Data

Chloe’s interest in diversity began long before her move into consulting. During her recruitment career, she noticed how few women were entering data and technology roles. The numbers tell the story clearly. For every four men starting out, there is not even a single woman. The figure sits at point six-eight of a woman.

The problem does not only appear in the workforce. It shows up inside the data sets too.

Chloe references the now-famous example of car crash test dummies. Until 2022, the standard female dummy was not designed based on a real woman. It was simply a shrunken male model, roughly the size of a twelve-year-old girl. As a result, women are 47 per cent more likely to be seriously injured in a collision. When the data is biased, the outcomes follow.

As Chloe puts it, “The imbalance is not just women working in the data space. It is in the data sets we are using. It is not only about fairness. It is the right thing to do.”

The same pattern shows up across modern AI. Facial recognition, recommendation systems and automated decision tools have all produced skewed results because they were built with skewed data. Representation shapes intelligence. It always has.

Why Diversity Creates Better Outcomes

Diversity is not a branding exercise. It is a business and societal necessity. Chloe highlights a simple truth. Teams built from different backgrounds are more productive, more creative and more resilient. They spot gaps that others miss and challenge assumptions that have gone untested for too long.

The evidence supports this. The World Economic Forum’s latest gender gap report estimates that true parity across politics, health, education and economics will take 134 years. Progress relies on deliberate action from everyone.

Arreoblue is far from perfect, but we have seen firsthand how increasing representation shapes culture. As Chloe jokes, having more women in the team “changes the vibe” in ways that matter. Apparently, this is a technical term.

Creating Real Pathways for Women in Data

So what can organisations do?

Mentoring and sponsorship programmes make a measurable difference. They create visibility, support confidence and provide women with senior advocates who actively open doors. Reverse mentoring is equally valuable. It gives leadership a chance to see the world through different eyes, which is often more educational than any training course.

Chloe sums it up clearly. “Every small step brings us a little bit closer to parity.”

These are not grand gestures. They are practical steps that compound over time.

Breaking Into Consulting: The Learning Curve No One Mentions

Chloe describes her first months in consulting as a steep learning curve. Then she corrects herself. Steep does not quite capture it. Vertical is probably closer.

Her biggest challenge has been translating business problems into data solutions. It requires curiosity, courage and the ability to ask simple questions without worrying that someone expects you to know the answer already.

What she has learned is this. The most powerful consultant in the room is rarely the one who knows everything. It is the one who listens properly and asks the question everyone else was too embarrassed to pose. Consulting is not an exam. It is a dialogue.

Her advice for those wanting to follow in her footsteps:

  • Be curious
    • Be open-minded
    • Be proactive in the conversations you pursue
    • Be resilient because the first answer is often no
    • Be adaptable because consulting moves fast

Above all, stay human. The data matters, but the people matter more.

Strengthening Alliances Through Trust

Alongside her client work, Chloe plays a key role in shaping Arreoblue’s partnerships. Strong alliances rely on trust, transparency and shared goals. When consulting partners and software vendors work openly, echo chambers disappear, and complex delivery becomes simpler.

Clear communication reduces friction. It also leads to better outcomes for the client, which is the only reason partnerships exist in the first place.

A Closing Thought

Empathy sits at the heart of effective consultancy. If you can understand the world through the eyes of your client, you are far more likely to articulate the real problem. The tools and solutions follow from there.

Chloe’s final reflection ends the conversation on the message she cares about most. “Be curious and proactive, but always approach everything with empathy. We are people, and we deal with people. That is the beauty of consultancy.”

A reminder that in a world of automation and acceleration, being human remains a competitive advantage.
