This time, we sit down with Thor List, Director of Field Engineering at Databricks, to talk about the evolution of one of the world’s most dynamic data companies, the real-world impact of AI, and what responsible innovation really looks like.
After nearly seven years at Databricks, Thor has seen the company grow from a 700-person startup to a global leader redefining how businesses use data. His insights mix technical depth with genuine passion for helping people make better, faster and fairer decisions through data.
“When I joined, Databricks had around 700 people worldwide,” Thor recalls. “Every few months it felt like we were becoming something new. We started with hardcore data engineering and science, then moved into BI, governance, data warehousing and now real-time intelligence.”
He describes this constant evolution as a living experiment shaped by listening closely to customers. “We’ve always been guided by what our customers are asking for. If something doesn’t drive their success, we don’t do it.”
That relentless focus on value is what keeps Databricks climbing at rocket speed, scaling fast while staying grounded in purpose.
For Thor, the most exciting shift is not technological but cultural. Data is no longer confined to analysts and engineers; it’s becoming accessible to everyone. “We’re working on projects that give real-time insights to people who wouldn’t usually have access to that kind of data,” he explains.
“Imagine someone stacking shelves in a supermarket who can now ask, ‘Why is this product missing?’ and get a live answer linked to the supply chain. That’s the real power of data intelligence.”
The goal is simple: make data meaningful and usable for everyone, not just the experts.
With AI transforming every industry, Thor is clear about one thing: with great power comes great responsibility (we’ve never seen him and Spider-Man in the same room). “There’s plenty of hype around what AI will do to society, but like any major technology, it’s about balance,” he says.
“The key is making sure AI is ethical, sustainable and used to create opportunity, not inequality.” That starts with transparency.
“People should always know when they’re interacting with AI, and the data behind it should be governed and traceable. Ethical AI is everything from the energy we use to the fairness of our models.”
It is a principle that mirrors Arreoblue’s own belief: innovation should move at the speed of trust.
One of the most inspiring moments came when Thor spoke about AI as a leveller, not a threat. “These tools give people new ways to use their skills, regardless of the education or opportunities they’ve had,” he says.
“Someone who might not fit the traditional school system could still thrive as an architect or designer because the tools handle the maths or compliance for them. AI lets creativity and potential shine through.”
For Thor, that is the real promise of this era: not just efficiency or performance, but empowerment.
Looking ahead, Thor is optimistic. “We’re still in the early chapters of AI’s story,” he says.
“There will be challenges, but if we use it responsibly, it can create more jobs, better healthcare and lower costs of living. My advice? Don’t stand on the sidelines. Be part of it and help make sure it’s used for good.”
A reminder that while technology moves fast, progress depends on people. For Thor, the future of data and AI is as much about humanity as it is about code.
