Welcome to the Arreoblue Data Blog, where we explore how AI, data, and technology are driving meaningful change. Today, we’re joined by Tim Walpole, Head of Data and Creative Technology at the Retail Trust, to discuss how data and AI are shaping the future of employee wellbeing in the retail sector.
Retail is one of the UK’s largest industries, employing over 3 million people, but it’s also one of the most challenging environments to work in. High stress, financial insecurity, and workplace abuse are real issues. The Retail Trust has long supported retail workers through wellbeing initiatives—but now, with AI and data, they’re scaling that support in new ways.
Tim explains, “the Retail Trust covers 650,000+ colleagues across 200 brands, tracking everything from helpline interactions to wellbeing surveys. We’ve built a modern data lakehouse to turn this information into actionable insights—helping retailers better understand what their employees need and how to support them before crises emerge.”
With such highly sensitive data, protecting privacy is a priority. Tim outlines how the Retail Trust ensures anonymity: “The moment data enters our system, it’s 100% anonymised. We strip out personal identifiers and only retain demographic details. Even when providing insights back to retailers, we ensure no data is shared for groups smaller than five people.”
This level of responsible AI ensures that the Retail Trust can deliver valuable workforce insights to employers while maintaining complete confidentiality for employees seeking support.
Beyond simply reporting trends, the Retail Trust’s AI-driven insights help retailers act on their workforce challenges. Tim shares how their platform translates data into measurable business impact:
“Retailers are time-poor,” Tim explains. “So rather than just giving them raw data, we automate insights—offering them clear, actionable recommendations that they can implement quickly.”
One of the Retail Trust’s most exciting innovations is its AI-driven wellbeing campaigns. Retailers can now run targeted wellbeing initiatives without needing a dedicated data team.
Tim shares an example: “A retailer ran a January wellbeing campaign powered by our AI, which generated multilingual content in Romanian and Polish. The result? Double the usual engagement levels. And because the AI refines itself through human feedback, it gets better every time.”
This AI-driven approach ensures that employees get the right support in the right way—whether that’s financial advice, mental health resources, or proactive wellbeing content.
Looking ahead, Tim is excited about the future of Agentic AI—a step beyond traditional automation, where AI agents independently carry out tasks based on retailer needs.
“We’re moving away from static AI prompts and into modular AI agents that handle different tasks,” he explains. “One agent translates content, another validates it, another ensures it aligns with company tone and demographic preferences. Over time, these agents will improve through feedback, creating an AI system that’s self-optimising and highly personalised.”
This new AI pipeline, built using Databricks Mosaic AI, will allow retailers to generate bespoke wellbeing campaigns at scale—without needing to manually craft content.
With AI’s increasing energy demands, sustainability is also a key focus. The Retail Trust is working with Go Code Green to measure and minimise AI’s environmental impact.
“We monitor the carbon footprint of every AI process,” Tim says. “We’ve already reduced unnecessary processing by 40%, and we now schedule AI workloads for low-carbon intensity periods, when wind and solar energy are abundant.”
By combining AI efficiency with responsible energy use, the Retail Trust is ensuring that innovation doesn’t come at an environmental cost.
As AI continues to evolve, its potential to transform workforce wellbeing is undeniable. Tim sees AI not as a replacement for human empathy, but as a tool to enhance and scale support for those who need it most.
“This technology is making a real difference,” he says. “It’s helping retailers understand their workforce, drive better employee engagement, and ultimately create a healthier, happier retail industry.”
At Arreoblue, we’re excited to be part of this journey—using AI and data to build a better, more sustainable future for retail workers.
