Is This the Last Year Your Customers Buy From You Online?

The way customers buy is changing. Not because of a new platform, but because of autonomous shopping agents. These AI tools are beginning to manage the entire shopping journey. They search, compare, and complete purchases, all without human input.

It’s not a scare tactic. It’s a signal.

And this is not a future trend. It is already happening.

The Rise of the AI Shopper

Generative AI has gone mainstream. A Salesforce report from 2024 found that 17 percent of global shoppers already use AI for product recommendations. In the United Kingdom, Statista reports over 35 percent of consumers now rely on AI to assist with shopping decisions. That number rises even higher among Gen Z and millennial buyers.

During the 2023 holiday season, Adobe Analytics reported that AI-powered product recommendations influenced 51 billion US dollars in sales. That accounted for nearly 9 percent of total online spend.

These tools do not browse. They optimise. For price. For speed. For relevance.

Who Is Most Exposed?

If your product can be boiled down to price and specs, you are at risk.

Electronics, household goods, and general merchandise have already started to see AI disruption. Fashion and beauty, once thought immune, are now being targeted by agents trained on customer taste and trend data. Platforms like Finesse are already showing what is possible.

In the grocery sector, McKinsey reports that over 30 percent of global consumers now automate part of their weekly shop. This behaviour is likely to accelerate as AI agents become integrated into retail apps and operating systems.

If your brand does not stand out to a human or to a machine, you risk becoming invisible.

What Retailers Must Do Now

  1. Make your data machine-readable

Structured data, live inventory feeds, and product information that AI can access. These are now the baseline. If an agent cannot interpret your offering, it will not surface it.

  1. Optimise for AI, not just for search

This is not about SEO. This is about AIO. Warranties, return policies, sustainability credentials, delivery windows, and reviews all need to be machine-legible. Value must be clear, not just to customers, but to their algorithms.

  1. Build on trust

A Gartner study found that 70 percent of consumers are willing to trust AI if the brands using it are transparent. Retailers must be clear about how data is collected and how AI is deployed. First party data governance will become a brand differentiator.

  1. Prepare your operations for agentic behaviour

AI agents shop in smaller quantities, at higher frequency, and outside peak windows. Retailers must plan for operational unpredictability. That means dynamic pricing engines, adaptive fulfilment, and systems that flex under pressure.

  1. Build or integrate, but choose quickly

You do not need to build your own AI shopping assistant. But you do need a strategy for interfacing with the agents your customers are already using.

The Arreoblue Perspective

We do not see this as the end of e-commerce. We see it as the end of e-commerce as it was.

Retailers who are ready for autonomous demand will see better margins, faster conversion, and deeper loyalty. But they need to move.

At Arreoblue, we help retailers:

  • Structure their data for machine discovery
  • Optimise their presence for AI agents
  • Strengthen transparency and governance
  • Prepare their operations for demand

By next Black Friday, autonomous agents will not just be advising customers. They will be placing orders.

The only question is whether they will choose you.

Let’s talk.
